The South East Landcare community is proud to announce that several local Landcare groups from our region have been selected to present at the 2025 National Landcare Conference, showcasing outstanding community-led environmental work in the Restoring Biodiversity Across Landscapes stream. Among them is Hovells Creek Landcare Group, whose inspiring erosion control initiative is delivering tangible environmental benefits throughout the Lachlan River catchment.
Their project—“Erosion control works on properties to address threatened species and sedimentation issues in Hovells Creek and the Lachlan River”—has caught national attention for its integrated, landscape-scale approach to healing degraded land and protecting downstream ecosystems.
Working across multiple private properties in the Hovells Creek catchment, the group has implemented strategic erosion control works aimed at stabilising gullies, reducing sediment runoff, and improving riparian habitats for threatened species. The benefits are already being seen downstream, where cleaner water is flowing into the Lachlan River, enhancing both ecological health and water quality. A beautifully produced short video capturing the essence and outcomes of the project will be featured during the conference. You can view the video here:
“It’s not just about stopping erosion—it’s about restoring function to an entire landscape,” says a Hovells Creek Landcare member in the film. “Every tonne of soil we keep on the hill is a tonne that doesn’t end up in the river.”
This project was made possible through the commitment of local landholders, partnerships with government agencies, and support from the broader Landcare community. The collaborative, on-ground efforts not only combat erosion but also contribute to broader goals of climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land management.
We invite everyone to explore the full National Landcare Conference program, which is rich with inspiring speakers, grassroots stories, and forward-thinking projects like this one.
