Grazing Groups

There are several Landcare networks within the South East Landcare region that support Grazing Groups. These are supportive, inclusive groups helping to achieve better outcomes for graziers, their farms and finances. Based on a successful program called Growing the Grazing Revolution the group participants dive deeply into the practice of regenerative grazing. The aim of the groups is to support graziers in their districts through meetings, small group training and discussions. The group members are mentoring each other and developing their own support networks to provide leadership in better grazing practices, moving from a reliance on chemical inputs to a holistic view of grazing practice.

Paul Hewitt and Paul Cavanagh gave an interesting talk about the operation of Grazing Groups in the Upper Lachlan and Boorowa districts at the 2023 Muster, you can view their presentation by clicking on this link.

Bowning Bookham Landcare Grazing Group

The Bowning Bookham Landcare group invites farmers and graziers in the district to join the Landcare on Farms group. This is an active and passionate group of farmers who is working and learning together to better their farm businesses, the properties that they run and the landscape as a whole.

The group meets regularly throughout the year with farm walks and other formal activities and training. The group aims to share ideas, help members plan and manage the upcoming season and provide peer support in decision making and problem solving.

We aim to support each other in implementing land friendly farming and grazing practices which are both productive and prioritise conservation and sustainability. Through collaboration and knowledge sharing, our members gain access to valuable insights and innovations in modern sustainable farming practices suitable to our district.

Some recent events and Farm Walks have focused on;

  • Soil health and building biodiversity
  • Multi species fodder crops
  • Zero kill sowing techniques
  • Grazing management practices
  • Farm landscape planning and revegetation
  • Landscape hydration and drought planning

Whether you’re an experienced farmer looking to take your practices to the next level or a newcomer excited to learn and make a difference, our Landcare Farming Group welcomes everyone. Keen to get involved? Drop us an email, and we’ll ensure you’re the first to be informed about our group’s activities. Join us on farm!

Upper Lachlan Landcare Grazing Group

Seeking better outcomes for graziers, their landscapes & finances.

The Grazing Group is a network of Upper Lachlan Graziers who come together to share ideas, knowledge, and experience. We support land management practices that deliver better outcomes emotionally, environmentally, and economically.

  • Emotionally we encourage proactive, balanced decision making and action taking. This helps transfer a degree of control from the elements to the grazier.
  • Environmentally we support practices that acknowledge, value, and enhance the natural capital of our landscape.
  • Economically we support profitable systems and encourage realistic evaluation of expenditure.

Everyone is welcome! We host a friendly and non-judgmental atmosphere. Members represent a variety of grazing strategies and scales, with discussions focused around profitably improving landscape health. By learning from each other and sharing experiences, we encourage and facilitate landscape first thinking. We recognise healthy landscapes support resilient grazing systems and produce nutritious food and fibre.

Some basic principles we encourage members to consider are:

  • Adjusting stock numbers to suit conditions
  • Aiming for 100% ground cover 100% of the time
  • Grazing the 20 to 10cm zone of pastures
  • Aiming for a quick even graze, followed by adequate recovery
  • Encouraging perennial pastures and diversity

Our Values: Inclusive, Supportive, Stimulating
Our Purpose: To encourage and support movement towards more regenerative land management, acknowledging the diversity of participants, their aims, and skills.
Our Focus: To better prepare and adapt for the challenges that lay ahead.

We host:

  • seasonal meetings discussing topical themes
  • guest speakers and training workshops
  • farm tours, local and regional
  • individual farm visits for more focused discussions
  • a supportive and connected network of like-minded people
