On this International Women’s Day, South East Landcare proudly celebrates the remarkable women who drive our Landcare community — both the passionate volunteers and the dedicated employees who work tirelessly to protect and restore our natural environment.

Women have long been at the heart of Landcare, combining their knowledge, leadership, and dedication to create healthier landscapes and more resilient ecosystems. From running community projects and managing conservation properties to inspiring others through education and action, their contributions are invaluable.

Today, we shine a spotlight on two, of the many, inspiring women within the South East Landcare community — Sonya Reyes and Emma Rooksby — each representing the many roles women play in Landcare.

Sonya Reyes — Local Landcare Coordinator, Shoalhaven Landcare

Sonya Reyes’ journey with Shoalhaven Landcare began in 2020 when she returned from maternity leave, seeking a way to balance her passion for conservation with family life. As a Local Landcare Coordinator, Sonya works closely with volunteers, helping to manage natural resource projects and community events. Her expertise in natural resource management, combined with her dedication to making a real difference, has made her an integral part of the Landcare in the region.

Beyond her professional role, Sonya is also the custodian of her 60-hectare conservation property, Cumburmurra Sanctuary in Tallong. Despite the devastating impacts of the 2020 summer bushfires, she has witnessed the incredible regeneration of native biodiversity on her land — a powerful reminder of nature’s resilience and the importance of ongoing conservation efforts.

“It has been inspiring working with such knowledgeable, experienced, and passionate volunteers to make a real difference to our natural environment,” Sonya says.

Emma Rooksby — Volunteer, Chair of Landcare Illawarra & SEL Committee Member

Emma Rooksby embodies the spirit of volunteerism within Landcare. As the Chair of Landcare Illawarra and co-founder of the Growing Illawarra Natives website, Emma has dedicated countless hours to encouraging the planting of local species and fostering community engagement. She also manages a thriving Facebook community of over 2,000 members, all committed to protecting native biodiversity.

Emma’s passion for environmental protection and restoration shines through in her work, especially as she tackles the growing pressures of pollution and development in her region. Her leadership and advocacy have inspired many, and in 2024, Emma was recognised with the Environmental Achievement Award by the City of Wollongong — a well-deserved acknowledgement of her tireless efforts.

These two incredible women, Sonya and Emma, are just a glimpse of the broader Landcare family. For every Sonya and Emma, there are many more women — volunteers, coordinators, committee members, educators, and community champions — all contributing to the health and sustainability of our landscapes.

On this International Women’s Day, we extend our thanks to all the women of Landcare. Your passion, knowledge, and commitment inspire us daily and remind us of the power of community-driven conservation.

Let’s continue to support and celebrate the women making a difference in Landcare — today and every day.
