On October 30th, the Boorowa Community Landcare Group hosted an engaging one-day workshop as part of the Private Land Conservation Matters Project, funded by the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust and Landcare NSW. The workshop, aptly named Identify, Harvest, Grow, focused on plant identification, seed harvesting, and propagation, attracting a mix of Landcare members and community members keen to deepen their skills and knowledge.

Exploring Plant Identification with Alison Elvin

The day began with a session on plant identification, led by Alison Elvin, a well-known expert in the field. Participants were treated to an informative and hands-on exploration of trees, shrubs, and grasses. Alison brought along a variety of native plant specimens, guiding attendees through the fundamental principles of plant identification. Her detailed explanations and practical approach provided a solid foundation for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.

Learning Seed Harvesting with Tom Deery

The second session, presented by Tom Deery, shifted the focus outdoors for a practical demonstration of seed harvesting. Tom’s hands-on lesson included techniques for harvesting seeds from eucalypts and other native species, offering participants an invaluable opportunity to gain practical experience in the field. This interactive approach was met with enthusiasm and highlighted the importance of sustainable seed collection methods.

Propagating Native Plants with Kath McGuirk

Rounding off the workshop was Kath McGuirk, who delved into the topic of plant propagation. Kath’s session also took place outdoors, where she demonstrated propagation techniques and guided participants in assembling their own seedling trays. Each attendee was able to take their tray home, eager to nurture their seedlings and apply their newfound skills. This activity was a standout favourite, combining education with the joy of hands-on learning.

Community Feedback and Future Opportunities

The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed a desire for longer sessions with each speaker, as the one-day format could only scratch the surface of these rich and complex topics. The combination of expert guidance, practical demonstrations, and a collaborative atmosphere created an engaging and memorable experience for all.

Workshops like Identify, Harvest, Grow highlight the critical role Landcare plays in equipping communities with the knowledge and skills needed to care for and restore native ecosystems. The Boorowa Community Landcare Group extends its gratitude to the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust, Landcare NSW, and the inspiring speakers who made this event possible.
